The Republican Party has been in trouble for too long, and I think that’s the biggest problem the party faces right now, says former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle.

In the weeks ahead, the GOP will have to do the hard work of rebuilding the party and rebuilding the country if it is to win back the White House and maintain its congressional majority.
The GOP needs to win over the American people in 2018, especially in the Rust Belt, and in the heartland of its support base, according to Daschles colleague, Representative Doug Collins.
“This is a critical moment for the GOP,” said Collins.
“The American people have been fed a series of lies about the president.
And we have to be ready to respond to the American public.”
The Republican Party needs to show leadership on immigration and a strong border wall, said Collins, who served as an immigration adviser to the Trump White House.
He also thinks it will be important for Republicans to focus on the state of their own party.
While some in the GOP are beginning to realize the importance of the issue, others in the party still seem to be stuck on old positions, like the position of being more pro-gun.
“I think we need to put an end to the kind of backroom deal-making that we’ve seen in the past,” Collins said.
“That is just not the type of leadership that we need in this Congress.”
While the GOP must continue to make moves to make sure it does not fall back on old ideas, the party also needs to be bold on a number of issues.
For example, Collins thinks that the GOP needs a bold stance on health care reform and the importance to ensure the Affordable Care Act remains in place in the years to come.
And Collins said he believes the GOP should not only focus on immigration reform but also be willing to work with Democrats on a budget deal.
“The GOP must be bold.
It needs to take a bold approach.
The GOP must make a bold move on immigration,” Collins added.
On the national stage, Collins believes that the party needs a strong national security team and a stronger defense policy.
A strong national defense, he said, means taking care of our own troops, and it means being ready to protect our country and defend our allies.
Collins also believes that Republicans need to do more to reach out to women and minorities, who make up an important part of the electorate.
“Democrats are not going to win the White house in 2018 without women and people of color, and Republicans must not forget that,” Collins explained.
There are many more ideas in Collins’ column, but he hopes the rest of us take note.
